The past two weeks have seen us visiting all the schools (well nearly all) who are coming to help us out during our excavations, which begin tomorrow.
We’ve visited St Bartholomew’s in Longnor, Monyash, Hollinsclough, Earl Sterndale, Fitzherbert’s in Fenny Bentley, Elton, Biggin, Blackshaw Moor, Hartington, Buxton Community School and St Thomas More Catholic School. And we also found time to welcome work experience students from Lady Mannner’s to Under Whitle to look around before their placement starts.
The highlights have been many: for example, the look on a pupils face when she recognised her surname in a will from 1553; when the pupil decided that one of the artefacts found at Under Whitle needed some TLC; when a pupil couldn’t help but answer nearly every question I asked even though he was afraid of appearing uncool; the care with which pupils from every school practised their excavation techniques; the enthusiasm with which we were greeted by staff and children alike.
What a great build up to the excavations!
