WILLS AND INVENTORIES
Included here are a number of wills from the 16th to the 18th century. It is interesting to explore them and see how the bequeath their estate to to family and friends. And because we are also interested in the material culture (archaeology) of the period, these documents also paint a picture of the type of things people owned and used.

Here is a transcription of the will of James Sleigh. You may notice that James is not currently on the updated Sleigh family tree. This is in part due to difficulty tracking records and that he was a resident of Haddon (Derbyshire) and so his relationship with the Sleighs of Pilsbury is as yet unclear.

(An interesting question here is what was the source of the apparent wealth?)
Elizabeth was the daughter of Arthur Manifold of Nether Waterhouses, She married Ralph Sleigh, who was the brother of Richard Sleigh of Broadmeadow Hall. Ralph and Elizabeth lived at Nether Waterhouses all their life, with their eldest son Gervais taking over Broadmeadow. Gervais’ son Ralph would inherit Broadmeadow in turn.
Elizabeth seems to have been quite a shrewd business woman independently buying and leasing farms after her husband’s death.
Names only spelt as they are in the document.
