THE Horobins of Under Whitle

Copyholders and Leaseholders c. 1496 - c.1814

Until around the 1850s there were two farms at, what was to become, Under Whitle. Although they were in the parish of Sheen, these two farms belonged to the manor of Alstonefield. Sir Richard Harper had started to acquire this manor in the 1500s and the Harpers and Harper-Crewe would hold it as part of their estate until around 1814 when the estate was broken up and sold. At this point the Horobins, who had farmed here since 1496/1497, had to move.

Detailed information on the Horobins, especially relating to their landholdings between 1496 - 1631, can be found In Peeling Back the Layers: Final Report. Unless stated otherwise, baptisms, marriages and burials were recorded at St Luke’s Church, Sheen, Staffordshire Record Office D3596/1/1. The Horobins left a number of wills. We thank Jean Durbin for allowing the use her transcrition and Gweneth (Horobin) for accessing it on her site https://www.geocities.ws/gwynethart/

The information below summarises previous records along with any additional material from ongoing research. So far, additional information includes:

  •  a dispute between the Horobins and the Mottrams over a cottage, possibly Mare Dole, in 1534. This dispute gives information about the names of cottagers who were living in Whitle c. 1500.

  • More details about family members along with some analysis of their wills and inventories.
